Successful Frontiers conference in Bad Honnef
Between May 12th and May 16th, 2019, the 13th Frontiers in Low-Temperature in Plasma Diagnostics and 1st Frontiers in Low-Temperature Plasma Simulations was held in the Physikzentrum in Bad Honnef.
The conference was organized by the Research Department Plasmas with Complex Interactions and chaired by Prof. Czarnetzki from the SFB 1316. In total, 103 participants joined the diagnostics and simulation meeting.
Scientists from both collaborative research centers, SFB TR 87 and SFB 1316, attended the meeting and presented five poster and four oral contributions. Julian Held, PhD student in project A5 of the SFB-TR 87, was awarded the prize for the best oral presentation with his contribution Velocity distribution function of atoms and ionsin HiPIMS by Doppler broadening of optical emission lines during the conference. Congratulations to him!

PhD students enhance their English skills
In February, 8 PhD students of both SFBs, SFB-TR87 and SFB 1316, attended a language school in London for one week. The focus of this week was "presenting in English". In small groups of 4 PhD students with one teacher each they learned a lot about structuring a successful presentation and delivering arguments clearly and convincingly. Besides studying English phrases for presentations and leading discussions, they also discussed rhetoric and body language. By giving many prepared and spontaneous talks in the class, they applied directly what they have learned.
During the week they deepened their knowledge not only in presentation skills, but also in British culture and literature by reading common novel paragraphs such as Oscar Wilde.
Besides the English workshop the group enjoyed the stay in London and went for example to the musical Alladin and visited the British museum and the Tate modern. All in all, it was a successful week and the Phd sstudents from Bochum, Aachen, Cottbus, and Paderborn are grateful for the opportunity and support by the SBFs for this workshop.

Photonik-Akademie at Ruhr-Univesität Bochum and INP Greifswald
From 9 to 14 September, 29 MINT students from Germany and Switzerland were introduced to the application potential of plasma technology. The trip went to the laboratories of the Ruhr University Bochum, the INP Greifswald and the Dortmunder OberflächenCentrum "DOC", to the Fraunhofer IWS project group located there and to Cortronik GmbH in Rostock, an industrial partner.
This year, the joint academy of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the photonics industry was hosted by the Chair of General Electrical Engineering and Plasma Technology of the Ruhr University Bochum and the Leibniz Institute for Plasma Research and Technology e. V. in Greifswald.
For the students, the schedule was filled to the brim with information and exciting excursions. "I am very grateful for this eventful week," says Academy participant Ediz Herkert, who is studying photonic engineering in the Master's program at the University of Stuttgart. "On the one hand, we got to know the different areas in which plasma technology is used. On the other hand, we had the opportunity to establish contacts with companies and research institutions. The group of participants has also grown into a community during this week. "

RUB Japan Science Days
From July 4 - 7 2018, top researchers, presidents, vice presidents and executives from university management and administration from the University of Tokyo, Osaka University, the University of Tsukuba and RUB meet to promote the fruitful exchange among them.
The RUB Japan Science Days will be each devoted to a guiding topic of high societal relevance that offers multi- and transdisciplinary approaches to teaching, research and transfer. This year - honoring a topic that is presently hotly debated in Japan and also in Germany - the Science Days are devoted to "Society 5.0 - Chances and Risks of Digital Transformation and the Responsibility of Universities".
Furthermore, a framework program from the RUB is aocated for the Japanese guests to learn more about science in Bochum and the Ruhr area in general.
A separate workshop with plasma scientists from Japan and Bochum finally resultet in a great exchange of both groups and new enrolled cooperations between different groups.

RUB PhD students at WELTPP 2017
At the end of November, the 20th WELTPP took place in the old convent Rolduc in Kerkrade, the Netherlands. The scientific program was made up of five oral and two poster sessions which covered various topics in the field of low temperature plasma physics with a good balance of theoretical and experimental works. The very interested audience -mostly young researchers - led to a lot of good questions after the talks and fruitful discussions during the poster sessions.
Besides the scientific part, the programm was rounded by good food and a guided tour through the old Abbey. For me it was a great pleasure to take part in this workhop and for next year I recommend it for every young researcher in this field.
