GORDON RESEARCH CONFERENCE: PLASMA PROCESSING SCIENCE
The Gordon Research Conference "Plasma Processing Science and Societal Grand Challenges" has been held at Bryant University, USA, July 22-27, 2012. The Gordon conference series provides an opportunity for scientists to discuss recent results and current challenges without subsequently publishing them in conference proceedings. The special format of the conference, with ample time for scheduled discussions and opportunities for informal exchanges during the afternoon, also creates an ideal atmosphere for the joint development of new ideas. The main focus this year was on plasmas in the field of renewable energy as well as in the rapidly developing field of plasma medicine.
Prof. Achim von Keudell, whose presentation included the latest results in HPPMS, was elected by the plenary with a large majority as the next Vice-Chair of the conference and thus automatically becomes the next Chair of GRC Plasma Processing Science after the next event in 2014, which will be hosted by Prof. Jane P. Chang. In addition, Jun.-Prof. Jan Benedikt, Prof. Jörg Winter and Ph.D. student Hendrik Bahre participated in the conference and presented their results at the poster sessions.

EPS-ICPPP 2012
Prof. Rainer Stenzel (UCLA, Los Angeles), Prof. Padma Kant Shukla (RUB International Chair), and Prof Sigbert Kuhn (University of Innsbruck) during the reception of the Joint EPS-ICPDP Stockholm (July 2nd-6th, 2012) in the Town Hall of Stockholm City where the Nobel Prize ceremony in Physics, Chemistry and Medicin is held on 10th December every year. The EPS-ICPPP-2012 was also attended by Prof. Dr. Jörg Winter, Speaker of the RD Plasmas with Complex Interactions. There were 800 delegates participating at this international event and many distinguished speakers reported on the cutting edge aspects of modern plasma physics including basic plasma sciences, high-energy density plasmas including novel collective interactions in quantum plasmas, fusion energy (magnetic fusion and ICF), astroplasmas and space sciences, and industrial applications of low-temperature and dusty plasmas

ICPM 4
From 17 - 21 June 2012, the 4th International Conference on Plasma Medicine (ICPM 4) has been held in Orléans (France). The working groups of the "Plasmadecon" project from the Research Department "Plasmas with Complex Interactions" of the RUB were represented with a delegation of seven participants, including two presentations by Prof. Peter Awakowicz and Jun.-Prof. Julia Bandow as well as five posters. The subfields of electrical engineering, physics and biology were represented.
Every two years the ICPM brings together interdisciplinary scientists working on the very new and for research highly interesting topic of medical application of low temperature plasmas. The 4th conference can already boast more than 260 participants. Germany is the second most represented research nation after the host country.

3RD HIPIMS CONFERENCE IN SHEFFIELD
PD Teresa de los Arcos and Dr. Ante Hecimovic attended 3rd International Conference on High Power Impulse Magnetron Sputtering (HIPIMS) in Sheffield, on 19th and 20th June, 2012. Ante Hecimovic presented the latest results in the study of the instabilities occurring in the ON phase of the HIPIMS discharge. The aim of the conference is to gather scientists from all groups using HIPIMS to deposit thin films or to understand the complex processes taking place in the high power impulse magnetron discharge. The attendees present the latest findings in the field which offers ideal opportunity to hear about the current achievements in the field and discuss potential future collaborations.

39TH ICMCTF 2012 IN SAN DIEGO
From April 23 to 27, 2012, the 39th International Conference on Metallurgical Coatings and Thin Films (ICMCTF) has been held in San Diego, USA. The SFB-TR 87 supported this most important conference in the thin film field with 15 participants and actively contributed to the success of the event. The young scientists and the PhD students could have many talks and discussions with experienced scientists of the scene. In this way, each individual was able to generate an advantage for himself and can use this and the newly gained contacts for future work in the SFB. From the SFB's point of view, the highlights of this year's event were the invited lectures by Professor Schneider (MCh, RWTH Aachen) and Professor Bobzin (IOT, RWTH Aachen). Through these and the many presentations and poster contributions from the SFB, it was also possible to present the SFB to the public.

ATOMIC LAYER DEPOSITION (ALD) WORKSHOP
Prof. Anjana Devi had an invited talk about "Tuning precursor characteristics for ALD applications" at the ALD Workshop at the IMEC conference, which took part November 28th-29th, 2011, in Leuven, Belgium. IMEC performs world-leading research in nano-electronics and nano-technology. Imec’s research is applied in better healthcare, smart electronics, sustainable energy, and safer transport. To promote collaboration and the exchange of knowledge within Europe, as well as to discuss about new trends and opportunities, imec organizes a workshop on the principles and use of ALD. The workshop is organized by Imec Belgium and Imec-NL. The workshop will take place at imec’s research facilities in Leuven, Belgium.

INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON THE FRONTIERS OF FUNDAMENTAL PHYSICS (FFP12) AT THE UNIVERSITY OF UDINE, ITALY
Academician Professor Padma Kant Shukla CorrFRSE and Foreign Member of the Physics Class of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (KVA) and the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA) was invited to deliver a plenary talk on Relativistic Nonlinear Quantum Plasmas at Nanoscales at the International Symposium on the Frontiers of Fundamental Physics (21-23 November 2011) at the University of Udine, Italy. The Symposium focused on various aspects of condensed matter physics, statistical physics, particle physics, quantum mechanics and quantum gravity, emerging areas of plasma physics (e.g. plasma assisted nanotechnology and high energy density plasmas, plasma based charged particle acceleration, etc.), and nonlinear sciences.
The Symposium was organized by Prof. Marisa Michelini (University of Udine) and Prof. Gautam Sidharth Burra (DG, B. M. Birla Science Centre, Hyderabad, India) together with an International Advisory Board composed of several members including the honorary chair Nobel Laureate (NL) Douglas Osheroff (Stanford University, California), Prof. Walter Greiner (Director, Frankfurt Institute of Advanced Studies, Germany), and RUB International Chair holder Prof. Padma Kant Shukla. During the opening ceremony of the Symposium, Prof. Shukla emphasized the importance of international scientific collaboration, in addition to presenting the plenary talk dealing with the table-top quantum free-electron lasers, thereby exploring new quantum x-ray and gamma ray regimes by using super-intense short laser pulses and relativistic electron beams in dense plasmas. This is one of the innovative approaches in emerging and cutting edge areas of plasma physics that holds the promise of producing high-power coherent radiation sources in the new parameter regimes that are going to set a new horizon in applied physics. At the FFP12, the Nobel Laureate Prof. Douglas Osheroff (Stanford University, California and The National Academy of Sciences, Washigton, USA), the 1996 Nobel Laureate in Physics for the discovery of the superfluidity in Helium 3, presented a special lecture on How (Experimental) Advances in Science are Made? Specifically, the NL Osheroff focused on the innovation, as well as on innovative and curiosity-driven challenging researches in physical sciences.

ITFPC 2011 & MIATEC 2011
The Innovations in Thin Film Processing and Characterisation & Magnetron, Ion processing and Arc Technologies European Conference (ITFPC & MIATEC 2011) was held in Nancy, France, from 14th to 17th November, 2011. The aim of the conference is to promote thin film growth techniques and processes, contribution of characterisation techniques to thin film science and engineering, process diagnostics, modelling and numerical simulation and applications and functional properties. The conference was a great opportunity to present and observe recent progress in research of magnetron and ion processing technologies. It had one dedicated sessions for High Impulse Power Magnetron Sputtering (HIPIMS), where recent achievements in the field were presented. Prof. Dr. Jörg Winter, Prof. Dr. Achim von Keudell, Dipl-Phys. Marina Prenzel and Dr. Ante Hecimovic attended the conference where they had a chance to find about the latest achievements in the field of magnetron plasma, furthermore they made valuable contacts with experts from the field and agreed on future collaborations.

PHYSICS SYMPOSIUM AT THE ROYAL SWEDISH ACADEMY OF SCIENCES
Academician Professor Padma Kant Shukla CorrFRSE and FORMemb of the Physics Class of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (KVA) and the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA) was invited to deliver a plenary talk on Dusty Plasmas at the Physics Symposium (15-17 November 2011) of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (KVA) that awards the Nobel Prize in Physics. The meeting was focused on the cutting edge physics of multi-disciplinary sciences and was hosted by the Academy's Physics Class Chair Björn Jonson. At the Physics Symosium, Academician Ludwig Faddeev of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow, Russia, and Academician Steven Girvin of the National Academy of Sciences, Washington, USA delivered plenary talks as well.

64TH GASEOUS ELECTRONICS CONFERENCE IN SALT LAKE CITY
The 64th Gaseous Electronics Conference (GEC) is, together with the 53rd Annual Meeting of the American Physical Society Division of Plasma Physics, held November 4th-18th, 2011 in Salt Lake City, USA. This year, the GEC contains 37 invited talks, 209 oral talks and 175 poster presentations with topics ranging from fundamental studies of for example Electron and photon collisions with atoms and molecules, to plasma applications such as processing of materials or treatment of living tissues. The “Research Department Plasmas with Complex Interactions “of RUB is represented very well this year. Thirteen researches are visiting the conference with three invited talks (Jan Benedikt talks about the diagnostics of atmospheric pressure plasma jets, Julian Schulze discusses the electric asymmetry effect in capacitively coupled discharges, and Prof. Uwe Czarnetzki gives a talk at the Monday workshop "Control of Distribution Functions in Low Temperature Plasmas: Creating the Roadmap"), 9 oral talks and 10 posters. This counts for almost 5% of all contributions at the conference and illustrates the leading position of RUB in the low temperature plasma research!
